Shirley M. Modereger Larson

September 23, 1923 ~ December 1, 2018


Shirley “Ould” Modereger Larson, long-time resident of Yankton, SD, passed away on December 1, 2018 at the age of 95. Burial of her cremated remains will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery at a later date.


Shirley was born in Melbourne, Australia on September 23, 1923 to Leslie and Lily Ould. She remained a citizen of Australia until she met Harold J. Modereger during WWII. Shirley and Harold were married at St. Augustine’s Parish in Melbourne, Australia on November 16, 1944. Shirley immigrated to the United States in 1946. She worked as a dental assistant and receptionist, raising three daughters.


Shirley and Harold were avidly involved with the Episcopal Church of Yankton, SD. They enjoyed traveling and spending time with their daughters and grandchildren at their cabin in the Black Hills.


Shirley was remarried to Clifford “Kip” Larson in 2006 following Harold’s death in 2004. Shirley and Kip were married until Kip’s passing in 2015.


Shirley is survived by her daughters Shirley Ann “Shann” Doerr (Yankton), Janice Giacalone (Austin, TX), Elizabeth Kathol (Yankton) and her grandchildren; Michael Hayward (Freehold, NJ), Drew Hayward (Rapid City, SD), Hope Gunderson and Dylan Hart (Austin, TX), Chelsea Wolf (Sioux Falls, SD), and Jonathan Kathol (US Airbase, Japan). Shirley had 5 great-grandchildren: Malcolm Hayward, John Hayward, Payton Campbell, Kellen Hunhoff and Norah Wolf. Shirley’s stepchildren: Richard, Roger, Doug and Karen Larson. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and brother Leslie B. Ould Lilly Ould and Leslie W. Ould, as well as her husbands, Harold Modereger and Kip Larson.





Howard W. Fulweiler

August 26, 1932 ~ December 30, 2018


Howard W. Fulweiler, Jr., former childhood member of Christ Church, passed away December 30, at age 86. Services were held at Calvary Episcopal Church, Columbia, MO on January 4, 2019 where he had been a very active member the past fifty-eight years.  Howard was the son of The Rev’d. Howard W. Fulweiler, Sr and Mary Louise (Boyles) Fulweiler. He was born August 26, 1932 in Media, PA. Following his father’s death four years later he and his mother moved to Yankton to live with his widowed grandfather, Judge Virgil Boyles. Howard attended the Model School at the Sacred Heart Convent for 8 yrs., after which he enrolled at Kent Academy, Connecticut. Four years later he enrolled at USD, Vermillion for his BA and MA in English Literature. He served in ROTC and the US Army in Germany. Howard married Sally Nichols of Sioux Falls in 1953 and following his army service they moved to Columbia, MO where he was Chair of the English Department until his retirement in 1992.


Howard is survived by his wife, Sally, children: Peter, John (Patricia), Mary (Casey) Swank, Ann (David) Carlson, thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and sister (Polly) Sister Bernadine, OSM.
